Driving the change for sustainable manufacturing in the UK

From its humble beginnings in button production to becoming a leader in precision plastic injection moulding, Rosti has redefined manufacturing excellence over the decades. Today, the company stands as a beacon of innovation and sustainability, shaping the future of manufacturing in the UK and beyond.

Founded in 1944, Rosti started by producing buttons using injection moulding, a more cost-effective and efficient method than traditional press moulding.

“Today, Rosti's UK operations continue to build on this legacy with an emphasis on sustainable practices and cutting-edge technology,” says Jacek Lubowicki, Managing Director for Rosti UK.

Iconic products like the Margrethe mixing bowl, designed by Jacob Jensen, highlight its commitment to innovation and design. With strategic acquisitions, including its integration into the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group in 1971 and Nordstjernan’s acquisition in 2010, Rosti continues to thrive globally, adapting to changing market demands while upholding its core values of sustainability and efficiency.

A strategic expansion to the UK market

The UK, with its robust manufacturing sector and focus on clean growth, has become a key market for Rosti. “The UK offers a dynamic business environment that aligns well with our sustainability goals,” Jacek explains. With over 50 employees across its UK operations, Rosti continues to expand as demand for eco-friendly manufacturing solutions rises. "Sustainability has become a cornerstone of our operations. We are constantly integrating clean technologies to reduce our carbon footprint and minimise waste,” he adds.

This commitment to sustainability has positioned Rosti as a leader in the UK's green manufacturing sector, well aligned with the country's ambitious Net Zero targets. As businesses seek ways to reduce their environmental impact, Rosti’s sustainable solutions are in high demand.

Innovation at the heart of Rosti’s UK operations

Innovation is a key driver for Rosti’s operations in the UK. Jacek highlights, “We’ve been focused on incorporating advanced technologies into our production lines, ensuring that not only are we efficient, but also environmentally responsible.” Through the increased use of recycled materials and optimising energy consumption, Rosti is making significant strides toward the UK’s Net Zero objectives.

Another important aspect of Rosti's strategy is its focus on the circular economy. “We’re not just reducing carbon emissions — we’re also promoting the reuse of resources,” Jacek explains. As Rosti continues to innovate its manufacturing processes, the company is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable production in the UK.

Learning and evolving through expansion

Rosti’s expansion into the UK market has not been without challenges. Jacek reflects, “If we had a deeper understanding of regional business culture and supply chain management earlier, we could have streamlined operations more effectively. The pace at which we scaled could have been better adjusted to suit the local market dynamics.”

The company has also identified the importance of digital transformation, which has become a critical focus. “We’re accelerating our use of digital tools to improve operational efficiency,” Sally says. “We’re learning and evolving, and this experience is helping us as we expand our global presence.”

The UK’s potential for Nordic businesses

Rosti’s success is a clear example of the opportunities available for Nordic businesses in the UK, particularly those focused on sustainability and innovation. Jacek sees a growing demand for products that align with the UK’s green agenda. “The UK market, with its emphasis on renewable energy, low-carbon technologies, and the circular economy, offers significant prospects for companies that prioritise sustainability,” he says.

For other Nordic companies looking to expand into the UK, Jacek’s advice is simple: “Understanding the local business environment, particularly the post-Brexit landscape, is key. Building strong relationships with stakeholders is crucial to navigating the market and driving success.”

A bright future in the UK

Looking ahead, Rosti is committed to expanding its sustainable manufacturing solutions and contributing to the UK’s green economy. As Rosti continues to grow, the company is exploring opportunities for future collaboration with UK business organisations, including the Department for Business & Trade. These partnerships will be crucial in supporting Rosti’s innovation and sustainability goals, helping to strengthen its position within the UK market.

“We’re focused on clean growth, digital transformation, and innovation, ensuring that we remain a key player in the UK’s manufacturing sector for years to come,” Jacek concludes.
